Please Avoid Interior Design Trends

With my inbox being bombarded with articles about interior design trends for 2021, I’d like to spend a bit of time encouraging you to avoid them. Today, rather than focusing on the interior design trends, I’m sharing three ways to help make your home more beautiful while investing in classic details, quality items, and most important, things you love. Doing these things will allow your home to stand the test of time. Trends, schmends, I say.

Colour Trends for 2021

Every year Pantone releases a new “Colour of the Year,” and while it’s nice to know the colour trends and appreciate where they come from, it doesn’t mean we should try to stick to them. For 2021 Pantone has actually selected two colours – Illuminating (a bright yellow) and Ultimate Gray. Here is what a representative has to say about the colours chosen this year: “The union of an enduring Ultimate Gray with the vibrant yellow Illuminating expresses a message of positivity supported by fortitude. Practical and rock-solid but at the same time warming and optimistic, this is a colour combination that gives us resilience and hope. We need to feel encouraged and uplifted; this is essential to the human spirit.” While I love this message and have nothing against bright yellow or a standard gray, they are not colours I’ll be looking to for designing or decorating this year. If you love yellow and gray, I say go for it. I strongly feel that your home should be your sanctuary and a place that brings you joy, so I say live with what you love. Just please do not try to introduce yellow and gray into your home because it’s on-trend.

Style Trends for 2021

Interior design style trends were all over the place this year. I have seen complete opposites trending such as dramatic and zen, rustic and sleek, traditional and modern, light and bright as well as dark and moody… Hm. Confusing, right? Again, I encourage you to not look at trends when designing or decorating your home. Determine your style, what you love, and do that. By using clean and classic elements made of quality materials, your home will make you happy for years to come. Now don’t get me wrong, there are some trends that I’m loving (hello oak cabinetry!), and I think that you can layer trends into your home in a thoughtful way. I just don’t believe in following trends for the sake of being trendy. Having an entirely on-trend home is the fastest way to have your home look dated quickly. I feel personal touches, classic details, and good quality products are the keys to a good home.  Again, live with the things that you love, and well, you’ll love your home for much longer.
