Where to Spend & Where to Save During a Renovation

Renovating your home is an exciting adventure filled with possibilities and challenges. I know this because I get to share in this excitement with clients all the time, and I’ve lived through a couple of my own renovations. I’ve started another renovation in my home (so exciting – more on that later), so I’ve been spending a lot of time balancing my budget – To make the most of your renovation budget, I think knowing where to spend and where to save is essential so, I wanted to share my tips for allocating your budget wisely. Are you ready to learn where you can be more economical without compromising style or quality when renovating your home? Let’s dive in

Where to Spend

The Layout & Structure: Investing in your home’s layout and structural elements is crucial as they form the foundation of your renovation. A well-thought-out layout can enhance both functionality and aesthetics, making your space more efficient and enjoyable. Allocating a portion of your budget to work with a skilled interior designer ensures that you optimize your space effectively. This investment pays off in both immediate comfort and long-term value. I have been VERY focused on my home’s layout because even a few inches here or there can make a big difference.

Custom Millwork: Custom millwork adds a touch of sophistication and personal flair to your home. Tailored pieces like built-in bookshelves and bespoke trim details not only enhance the visual appeal but also maximize storage, organization, and character. Investing in high-quality custom millwork ensures durability and an elevated look, making it a worthwhile investment.

Lighting & Plumbing Fixtures: High-quality lighting and plumbing fixtures play a significant role in your space’s functionality and aesthetic. Investing in durable, stylish fixtures for areas like kitchens and bathrooms enhances these essential elements’ overall design and performances. Premium fixtures can elevate the look of your home and provide a cohesive look and a quality finish that you’ll love for years to come.

Where to Save

Appliances: While essential, appliances don’t need to be the focal point of your renovation budget. Opt for mid-range models with good performance and energy efficiency without the premium price tag. There are plenty of reliable, stylish options available that can meet your needs without stretching your budget. I have a client who recently invested in a La Cornue Range, and I LOVE it so much, but if you cannot afford to splurge on appliances, you don’t have to.

Tile & Countertops: Tiles and countertops can vary widely in price, and you can achieve a beautiful look with more affordable options. Choose standard tiles or budget-friendly alternatives like porcelain or ceramic. Creative tile patterns and layouts can make a statement without having to spend on high-end tiles. And while very high-end and stunning marbles are very on trend right now, simple and more affordable options will likely do better at standing the test of time.

Door & Cabinet Hardware: Most people consider hardware to be a minor detail in a renovation but multiply that minor detail multiple times throughout your home, and you might get sticker shock when your invoice arrives. Don’t worry; you can still achieve a stylish look without spending a fortune. Opt for standard hardware that offers good quality at a lower price and a nice shape and finish. Mixing and matching hardware styles can also create a unique appearance while keeping costs down.
