How To Select The Perfect Paint Colour

One of the most frequently asked questions I get is, “How do I select the right paint colour?” So I thought it would be helpful for me to share some of my tips to help you select the perfect paint colours for your home.

Pick The Paint Colour Last

People are always eager to get their painting done first, and while it’s exciting to get your home painted, the colour selection really should be one of the last things you do in the decorating process. There are so many different paint colour options, so it is much easier to coordinate paint colours with finishes and fabrics than it is to try and coordinate finishes and fabrics with paint colours already selected. I suggest planning your room out, gathering all the elements such as finishes (flooring, tile, counters, etc.), fabrics, rugs, and then selecting your paint colours to coordinate. Choosing the paint colour at the end will allow you much more flexibility while decorating and will give you a more cohesive look.

Know Your Undertones

Sometimes it’s hard for people to “see” colour. Many of my clients will say things like, “I thought it was white, but now that the room is painted, it looks blue” – So I’ve got a little trick to help you with that. Be sure to get the full colour strip when looking at colours in the paint store and look at the darkest colour on the strip, as this will show the undertone the best. If you’re still having a hard time, gather a few different colour strips and compare them because it’s easier to see colour when compared to another colour.

Test Your Paint Colours

The best thing you can do before committing to a paint colour is to test it in your space. Lighting can really change the look of a colour, so even as a professional, I prefer to test colours in the room before painting. An easy way to do this is to select a couple of colours you think you like best, paint a large piece of white foam board in each colour, and move them around your room for a few days. Having a couple of colours allows you to see which one is best, and by moving them around the room for a few days, it will help you to see the colour in different lights, which makes a difference.
