Designing My Own Home: A Lesson in Patience, Purpose, & Beautiful Progress

If you’ve ever taken on a home renovation project while balancing work, parenting, and everyday life, you know it’s rarely a quick or easy process. And when you’re an interior design professional? It doesn’t make it easier; it just adds more beautiful options to obsess over.

Designing our home has been a deeply personal experience, one rooted in patience, purpose, and a whole lot of thoughtful decision-making. As someone who lives and breathes interior design, I knew from the beginning that this project wouldn’t be rushed. I wanted every detail to feel intentional, every choice to reflect how our family lives and what we truly love. Here are a few progress photos and design concepts to give you a peek behind the scenes and an idea of where it’s headed…

Intentional Choices, Beautiful Challenges

One of the trickiest parts of this renovation? Making decisions for my own space. I’m surrounded by stunning interiors every day and exposed to countless materials, styles, and creative ideas. Choosing for myself felt like trying to pick a favourite child – I genuinely love so many options. But that’s part of what made this process so meaningful: it allowed me to slow down and get really clear on what mattered most to us.

The Realities of Renovation

Of course, no renovation is without a few bumps along the way. Most recently, we experienced one of those classic renovation setbacks – Our custom hand-cut marble tile arrived scratched, delaying the project by about five weeks. Sigh. While such a hiccup is never fun, it does happen occasionally. Thankfully, our day-to-day life hasn’t been too disrupted; we still have full use of our main floor, including our kitchen, full bathroom, and bedrooms, which has made things much more manageable.

Now, we’re (slowly) approaching the final stretch (once the tile is in, of course) and just waiting on cabinetry, countertops, and fixtures to be installed. While the space isn’t finished yet, it’s already beginning to reflect the warm and functional home I envisioned from the start.

What I Believe About Interior Design

Whether you’re designing your own home or working with a professional interior designer, I always recommend taking an intentional approach. Interior design isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about creating a space that supports your lifestyle, reflects your values, and brings ease to everyday living.

At SED, we pair that intentionality with a refined process. One that honours every detail, considers how a home flows and functions, and results in spaces that feel elevated, personal, and enduring. When done right, design isn’t rushed – It’s refined.

I’m so very grateful to have the opportunity to create a home that truly reflects who we are, and I can’t wait to share the final reveal soon-ish (which, in the interior design industry, means not very soon at all, haha), so stay tuned!
