3 Tips For Your Next Renovation

Renovation season is upon us, and with that comes lots of questions from people on how to help their projects run smoothly. If you’re tackling a home renovation to update your interior, be sure to keep my three simple renovation tips handy to help you along the way.

Think About It

There are lots of things to consider when designing a space to be renovated. The best way to start is to think about how you live in the space, and better yet, what annoys you about the space now so that you can plan accordingly.

Need somewhere to store that clunky stand mixer? Think of where it can go to clear up some much-needed counter space. Sick of looking at a pile of remotes? Be sure to have a spot for them when you design your living room built-ins. Want to have more space for platters in the kitchen for when you entertain? Include a larger island in your plans. Are you tired of tripping over the kids’ backpacks? Proper cubbies for everyone in your mudroom should be a top priority.

There are lots of things you can do to make your life easier, prettier, and more organized, so be sure to make your wish list before you start your renovation, so you know to plan for.

Use Visuals

It’s important to use visuals to start so that you can determine the style direction you’d like to head for your project. At our office, we use Pinterest to work with our clients to gather inspiration images – You can follow us HERE.

Collecting images of interior designs you love will help you better determine what you’re trying to achieve. You can also use these visuals to help communicate your desires to your interior designer and contractor. Words leave room for things to be misinterpreted, so visuals are essential for accuracy.

It’s easy to get carried away and save too many inspiration images, so I challenge you to really look at each image so that you can narrow things down to 5-10 for each room. This way, you’re sure to end up with a strong collection of images that really focus on what you truly love.

Build A Buffer

When renovating, it’s important to know what’s realistic so that you can avoid frustrations along the way. Renovations don’t always go perfectly, so knowing ahead of time what you may expect will help you feel better about the process as a whole.

Be sure to build money into your budget for contingencies. You may find that things cost more than you initially thought due to a hiccup that the contractor came across along the way, or because you’ve fallen in love with a gorgeous tile that is a little fancier than you thought you wanted initially. Having extra money set aside will make things like this manageable, rather than frustrating.

If you don’t have to dip into your spare funds, that’s fantastic, and you can put that money towards extra goodies for the first party you host in your newly renovated home.
